The Flying Horse was relatively quiet when Miranda and Tim arrived.

He parked the car in the corner of the car park to avoid being seen on the cameras. “Are you ready for this? Follow my lead, there’s no need for you to be scared. Have you got your glasses? They’ll add to your disguise, he shouldn’t recognise you then.”

“Yes, I’ve got them in my pocket.” Miranda popped them onto the bridge of her nose and fiddled with the sides of her hair in the mirror. “I’m good to go.”

“Okay. Nice and cool, all right? Leave the talking to me. You let out an excited giggle now and again, pretending you’re enjoying yourself.”

“No pretence needed. I’m thrilled to be here.” She chuckled.

“Try and contain yourself. Are you ready?” he repeated.

“Yep, one hundred percent.”

They exited the car and walked across the gravel to the main entrance.

“Keep your head down,” he said, “but don’t make it obvious, pretend you’ve spotted something on the ground or something.” They weren’t going to bother with gloves as neither of their prints were in the system.

She pointed at the ground, and they both looked down at the same time they entered the front door. Three customers glanced their way. There was no one behind the bar. They approached it, sat on a couple of stools and waited for the barman to appear.

It was a couple of minutes before Peter arrived and apologised for the delay. “Sorry, I was making a start in the cellar, we’ve got a delivery coming in the morning. I’ll finish it off later. I wasn’t expecting any latecomers. What can I get you, folks?”

“Two brandies, one with ice, thanks,” Tim said, adding a deep timbre to his voice.

The barman served the drinks and began tidying the bar, collecting the dirty glasses. Over the next ten minutes, the other three customers drifted off, bidding Peter a merry farewell as they left.

“This is it.” Tim said out of the corner of his mouth.

“Yep, bring it on.”

“All right, folks. There’s no need to rush. I can trust you by yourselves for a few minutes, can’t I? While I finish off getting the cellar ready.”

“Of course you can, mate. Want to lock the door in case anyone else comes in?”

“Yep, if that’s okay with you.” Peter bolted the door at the top. “Give me a shout when you leave.”

Tim patted his stomach. “Eh, I could give you a hand down there if you want. I’m an ex-landlord myself, hence the rotund figure.”

“Would you mind? I’m up against it, we’ve been really busy the last couple of days, and the staff have been dropping like flies. I haven’t had the time to get things shipshape down there, you know what the draymen are like, impatient buggers at the best of times.”

“You’ll be all right here, chick, won’t you?” Tim asked.

“Of course. I could clean up the bar a little for you, if you wanted me to. Anything to lend a hand.” She made a point of using a high-pitched voice.
